Data Recovery Basics
Last Updated 8 hours ago

Data recovery is the process of trying to retrieve files from a drive or device that is damaged, failing, corrupted, or no longer accessible normally.

Recovery May Be Possible When

  • A drive is failing.
  • Files were accidentally deleted.
  • A partition is damaged.
  • Windows can no longer access the drive.
  • The computer will not boot, but the storage device may still contain usable data.

If Important Data May Need to Be Recovered

  • Stop using the affected drive as much as possible.
  • Do not install recovery software onto the same drive.
  • Do not format or initialize the drive.
  • Do not continue writing new files to it.

Every recovery situation is different, and successful recovery cannot be guaranteed.

East Carolina Computers can evaluate the drive and determine the best next step.
