Frequently Asked Question
What Should I Do After Accidentally Deleting a File?
Last Updated 9 hours ago
If you accidentally delete an important file, avoid creating or downloading unnecessary new files until you determine whether the deleted file can be recovered.
Start With the Safest Recovery Options
- Check the Recycle Bin. If the file is there, it can usually be restored easily.
- Check any local or remote backups you use.
- Restore the file from a backup if a recent copy is available.
If the File Is Not in the Recycle Bin or a Backup
- Stop using the affected drive as much as possible.
- Avoid creating, downloading, or copying new files to that drive.
- Do not install recovery software onto the same drive.
Deleted data may remain recoverable until new data overwrites the space where the file was stored.
If the file is important, contact East Carolina Computers before installing recovery software or making additional changes to the drive.
